Writing · Commas
Insert commas to separate coordinate adjectives. If a sentence needs no commas, rewrite it unchanged or type Correct. Click Check Answer to check your work.
About This Rule
- Coordinate adjectives each describe the noun independently, so you separate them with a comma: a fun, rewarding experience.
- Two tests: if you can put and between them (fun and rewarding) or change their order (a rewarding, fun experience) and the sentence still sounds natural, they are coordinate and need a comma.
- Cumulative adjectives build on each other and follow the usual order (opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose). They take no comma: a charming old town, a cozy little cabin.
- Some pairs can be read either way, and writers differ. In those cases both answers are accepted.
