About This Rule

  • When you speak directly to someone and use their name or title, set it off with commas.
  • At the beginning of a sentence, put a comma after the name: John, did you know that?
  • At the end, put a comma before it: Did you know that, John? In the middle, use a comma on each side: Do you think, Dr. Smith, that diet matters?
