About This Rule
- Use a comma to separate a direct quotation from the words that introduce or follow it: The student asked, “What are the requirements?” / “Yale has a renowned law school,” said the officer.
- In American English, a comma or period at the end of a quotation goes inside the closing quotation mark.
- Do not use a comma when the quotation is introduced by that and works as part of your sentence: The dean announced that “the program will begin next semester.”
