About This Rule
- In numbers of four or more digits, use commas to separate groups of three digits, counting from the right: 1,234,567. For four-digit numbers, the comma is often optional (1,234 or 1234).
- Do not use commas in years (1776), page numbers (page 1234) or street addresses (12345 Elm Street).
- Use a comma between the day and the year in a date: July 4, 1776.
- Use a comma to separate related parts of a reference, such as act 2, scene 3 or page 10, line 5. With measurements such as five feet, four inches, the comma is traditional, but many style guides now omit it.
