About This Rule
- Put a comma between the day and the year: August 28, 2023.
- Put a comma after the day of the week: Monday, August 21, 2023.
- When a full date comes in the middle of a sentence, also put a comma after the year: On May 19, 2024, the ceremony begins.
- Do not use a comma between a month and a year alone (June 2024) or between a season and a year (spring 2024).
- After a short introductory phrase such as In spring 2024, the comma is optional.
These rules follow American English style, which writes the month before the day.
