About This Rule
- A parenthetical expression adds a comment or transition that is not essential to the meaning of the sentence, such as however, in fact, for example, by the way, in my opinion or on the other hand.
- When it comes in the middle of a sentence, put a comma on each side: Many students, however, underestimate self-study.
- At the beginning or end of a sentence, one comma is enough: In fact, many professors agree. / Many professors agree, in fact.
