Commas to Separate Items in a Series – Exercise 1

Writing · Commas

Insert commas to separate the items in a series. The comma before the final and or or (the Oxford comma) is optional, so both versions are accepted. If a sentence needs no more commas, rewrite it unchanged or type No Commas Needed.

About This Rule

  • Use commas to separate three or more items in a series: Writing, speaking, and listening are important skills.
  • The comma before the final and or or is called the Oxford comma (or serial comma). It is common in American academic writing and helps avoid confusion, but many style guides, especially in British English and journalism, leave it out. Both forms are accepted in these exercises.
  • Do not use commas when there are only two items: interesting and fun.
